THE CARE OF PEARL JEWELRY

Regardless of size, shape or cost, pearls require care once they are purchased if they are to maintain their beauty. The following are some care suggestions which will also lengthen the life of pearl jewelry:

PUT ON PEARLS after applying make-up, hair spray and perfume as the chemicals in these products can damage the delicate surface of a pearl.
REMEMBER that only MAJORICA "organic" pearls have a special protective coating on their surface to help protect against the dangers of everyday use. However, they should be treated with care.
IF WORN FREQUENTLY; pearl necklaces should be restrung once a year - preferably on silk with knots between each pearl. Neglecting this will cause "the necklace to loosen and weaken increasing the possibility of a broken strand and lost pearls.
DON'T CLEAN PEARLS with commercial jewelry cleaners, chemicals or abrasives. Pearls can be washed, with special pearl cleaners which are now available or with warm water and a mild soap. They should be allowed to dry at least 48 hours on a flat towel to give the string ample time to dry. Generally, a quick cleaning with a soft, damp cloth will be sufficient to brighten pearls.
SPECIAL care should be taken in the storage of pearl jewelry. Keeping pearls in a special case or soft pouch in the jewelry box will protect them from scratches and abrasions from other items of jewelry.
